How Refunds Work With Afterpay

For an Afterpay purchase, follow the retailer’s return process and then confirm the refund and revised payment details in Afterpay. A package being delivered back to the retailer does not mean the refund has already been processed. Check both records before concluding that a payment is wrong or that money is missing.

This guide uses Afterpay’s U.S. return instructions. Financing products and country-specific agreements can differ, so check the terms for your actual order rather than applying a general rule to every loan. See the digital wallet and BNPL overview for the wider payment structure.

Request the return from the retailer

Collect the order number, items, purchase amount, and return reason. Follow the store’s authorization and shipping instructions. Afterpay does not inspect the item for the retailer or decide every question about its condition. Save the listing and return policy if you dispute the retailer’s proposed deduction.

Ask what amount the retailer approved and when it processed that amount through the original payment route. A store credit, return authorization, and payment refund are different outcomes. If you want an original-method refund, make that request clear before accepting a different settlement.

Use the relevant Afterpay return option

Afterpay’s official U.S. returns instructions describe reporting a return through the order details. The process can move the next payment later, but a payment scheduled within 24 hours may still process. Check the confirmation and displayed date rather than assuming that reporting the return canceled every obligation.

If you do not see the described option or your financing agreement differs, ask Afterpay which process applies. Do not invent an equivalent by blocking your repayment card. The important evidence is a confirmed arrangement for that order, not a change you made outside the provider’s procedure.

Watch for the retailer’s actual refund

After the retailer processes the refund, review the order in Afterpay and save the adjusted details. Match the amount and date to the retailer’s confirmation. If the store says “refunded” but the order does not reflect it, ask the store for its submitted transaction reference and ask Afterpay to locate that instruction.

The U.S. guidance explains that remaining payments are adjusted or canceled after the retailer processes the refund. Money owed back is returned to the card or cards used for payments. It gives an estimate of up to ten business days after processing, depending on the bank. That estimate does not begin when you first decide to return the item.

Keep more than one repayment card in view

If different payments used different cards, check each relevant account and the provider’s refund details. A credit on one card may be only part of the result. Do not assume the card used most recently must receive every returned payment. Ask for the allocation record if the displayed totals do not reconcile.

Our guide to multiple payment sources explains why repayment cards and the merchant’s checkout payment are separate layers. Keep the merchant refund amount distinct from the individual credits issued to your cards.

Check partial refunds against the whole plan

Write down the order amount, payments collected, approved refund, payments still due, and credits received. A partial refund does not necessarily mean all future payments vanish or that the entire refund amount arrives as cash. The provider’s updated plan should explain the result for the remaining purchase.

See partial BNPL refunds and payments still due for a worked reconciliation method. If the store refunded less than expected, ask it to explain the return calculation. If the store’s full instruction is recorded but the plan is inconsistent, take the plan and merchant confirmation to Afterpay.

Example: a return reported near a payment date

A customer reports a return on Thursday evening before a Friday payment. The payment processes while the retailer is still inspecting the package. The customer should check whether Afterpay confirmed a schedule change, keep the payment receipt, and include that collected amount in the eventual refund reconciliation. Processing alone does not establish that the merchant denied the return.

If a later revised plan still includes a payment that seems wrong, provide the order, return confirmation, refund amount, and screenshots with dates. Ask what event triggered the revision and whether the collected payment is included. A clear timeline is more useful than several disconnected support messages.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stop paying because tracking says the return arrived?

Follow the displayed schedule or a confirmed provider arrangement. Delivery to a warehouse and processing a payment refund are different events. Ask Afterpay about the available return procedure before a due date rather than unilaterally stopping repayments.

Can I receive both a store refund and a provider repayment?

Keep a record of all actual credits and disclose overlapping adjustments. A retailer refund that changes the plan and a repayment of money already collected may be parts of one result. They should reconcile to the corrected purchase, rather than produce an unexplained duplicate recovery.
