Can Store Credit Expire?

Store credit may have an expiration condition, but its validity depends on the instrument, agreement and applicable law. Do not assume every store-credit balance has the same protection as a purchased gift card, or that a date in a retailer’s app is necessarily enforceable. Establish what value was issued and why before deciding whether it expired lawfully.

The store-credit guide distinguishes return credit, gift cards and rewards. Expiration questions become clearer when the issue date, source of value and terms are recorded separately for each component.

Identify the source of the balance

A credit issued for returned merchandise

Keep the return receipt and offer that created it. Ask whether the retailer promised any expiration date and where that condition was disclosed. A credit issued instead of an agreed monetary refund also raises a remedy question, separate from the validity of the date attached to it.

A purchased gift card

Keep the purchase receipt, issuer details and terms. The gift-card instrument and its underlying funds can require separate attention. An expired physical card does not automatically establish that all remaining value was lost. Ask the issuer about replacement or access to funds before assuming the date ends the matter.

A promotional reward

A bonus or loyalty award may have different coverage and conditions from value purchased with money. Ask the retailer to identify the components if rewards and merchandise credit appear together. The word “credit” on the screen is not enough to establish which legal category applies.

US federal gift-card protections have a defined scope

For covered US gift cards, CFPB guidance on expired prepaid cards explains that gift-card funds generally must remain usable for at least five years, with some states providing more time. That should not be applied to every retailer reward or merchandise-return balance without checking coverage and exclusions.

The rule for the funds can differ from the date printed on a card. Ask the issuer what remains available and what process is required to obtain a replacement. Keep any fee or access question distinct from the assumption that the underlying balance simply disappeared.

Compare the original terms with the current display

Save the offer, receipt and terms that applied when the credit was issued. If the retailer later changes its website, record the change without assuming the new wording governed the earlier agreement. Ask support to identify the basis for the date applied to your particular balance.

For example, an account contains $40 from a returned item and $15 from a seasonal promotion. The app highlights a date beside the total. Ask whether the date applies to both components or only the reward. A component-level history is more useful than assuming the entire $55 expires together.

Spending, reloading and replacements

Ask how a partial purchase affects the remaining value and date. Do not assume that using a small amount restarts every expiration period or that adding new value extends old promotional credit. Keep the transaction record so you can compare the amount spent and the balance that remains.

If the retailer replaces a lost card or moves value between accounts, obtain written confirmation of the amount and terms. A new identifier should not be treated as evidence of a new purchase date without understanding the arrangement. The guide to credit transfers explains why access changes and ownership transfers are different.

If the retailer says the balance expired

Request the issuing transaction, relevant terms, expiration entry and any notices it relies on. Ask which part of the value was removed and whether another component remains. If you dispute the result, state the discrepancy and remedy sought rather than simply reporting that the account is empty.

An expiration entry differs from a purchase deduction, correction or security restriction. The guide to canceled store credit addresses those other explanations. Confirm what happened before challenging an event that may have been described inaccurately.

Before accepting a new credit offer

Ask for the amount, expiration terms, access route and spending restrictions in writing. Consider whether you can use the value under those conditions. If credit is proposed instead of a monetary refund you believe is due, assess the remedy separately; an attractive expiration period does not settle eligibility or payment rights.

Use a secure process for card numbers, PINs and identity evidence. Keep copies of the relevant documents, but avoid posting usable gift-card credentials publicly to demonstrate the missing balance.

Frequently asked questions

Does every gift card expire after five years?

No. A minimum protection is not an instruction that every issuer must expire value at that point. Check the issuer’s terms, coverage and any stronger applicable state or local rule.

Can a retailer extend credit as a goodwill gesture?

Ask whether it will review the request and what the extension changes. A discretionary extension is different from correcting an invalid expiration or restoring value removed by mistake.

Should I discard a card after its printed date?

First establish whether underlying funds remain and whether the issuer can replace the instrument. Keep the relevant details securely until the balance and access question is resolved.
